In 1874, the “Jones Hill” Life-Saving Station was established a mile north of the Currituck Beach lighthouse. The building was constructed in the 1874-Type style and the station was later known as the “Whales Head” station.
The 1874-Type station remained in service until 1903 when it was replaced by a Quonochontaug-Type building. The original 1874-Type station was torn down in 1959. Sometime in the mid-1980’s the 1903 station was moved and is only accessible by four wheel drive vehicle north of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse. Today, the station is a private residence and remains in good condition.
